Frequently asked questions about testing water samples

Do you come to my home to take the sample?

No, but clear instructions are provided for you here so that you can collect an uncontaminated sample to bring to us for testing.

What bottles can I use for my sample?

We provide bottles for all sample analysis. Different bottles are required for different services, please enquire at time of pick-up. Bottles can be collected during our normal business hours: 8:00am -- 4:00pm Monday to Friday. There is no charge for sampling bottles.

After I collect my sample how long do I have to submit it?

The sample should be brought to us within 8 hours (ideally) but up to 24 hours is acceptable for microbiology. NEVER put samples in the freezer.

Can I send samples via courier or bus?

Yes, samples may be submitted by courier services. SJLS does not cover the cost of shipping.

Who should test my water?

Water testing should always be carried out by an accredited laboratory.

How often should I test my drinking water?

It is recommended that private well water be tested every six months for bacteria. Water should always be tested after changes to the well structure, i.e. replacing the pump or fixing cap, or if you suspect ground water contamination.

How soon after I drop off my sample can I expect to get the results of the test?

Test results for bacteria are available the next afternoon at 3:30pm. Turnaround for all other tests results is 10 business days. Rush service is available by prior arrangement. This is dependent upon laboratory workload and type of service. Surcharges apply.
